A DEMOCRACY THAT JUST ISN’T IT

Today, May 29th, 2013 marks Nigeria’s “14th year in democracy” and I must admit I am not catching the vibe. Democracy has not been all too characteristic of life in Nigeria. Many times, we suspect the winner of the elections even before the campaigns start and our suspicions are confirmed on the final election days. The truth is, I can go on and on and list out everything wrong with Nigeria and I’ll end up writing a bible on this subject. However, being an optimist, I choose to look at the positives.
Our economy has actually grown, according to our Finance Minister, and our President, as clueless as he may seem at times, is doing what he can to fight terrorism. The fact remains that there is more bad news than good news. I think we have the right to celebrate our Democracy but we have no right whatsoever to think we have accomplished anything tangible.
I keep saying that until an on-air personality can openly criticize the government and not be persecuted for it, we have not achieved true democracy. Until we can experience transparency in government, our democracy is fake.
HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY to Nigeria, but I think today is not for celebration, rather, it’s for reflection. Let’s reflect on what we’ve done in the last 14 years and critically analyze what the next 14 years of our Great Nation’s existence will look like. God Bless Nigeria. God Bless you all.
