BUILDING SELF WORTH (Part 1)

Self worth is used to refer to a person’s reflection of, or a person’s opinion of the overall evaluation or appraisal of one’s value to himself or herself.
Sarah Mercer once said that “self esteem is not about ‘facts’ but about one’s belief”. I totally agree with this statement. I mean, Oprah is not the most beautiful woman but she possesses such a high sense of self worth that it rubs off on some of the guests on her show. Most of the greatest people on earth are not the most beautiful persons ever but they still feel good about who they are. In fact, they felt good enough to positively affect their lives and the world at large.
A while back, I saw an Indian movie “Taare Zamen Par” which is translated ‘every child is special’. The movie is about a little boy who was dyslexic but his parents- ignorant as they were- thought he was just dull, playful and stubborn. Dyslexia is a disorder involving difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. The child, knowing he had a problem, found solace in nature’s beauty, and trouble making. This he did in order to cover his ‘defect’. ‘Defect’ is quoted because that’s what people saw it as but not what his art teacher saw. His teacher saw in him, an uncanny talent for art and crafts rather than a deficiency.
The point is, in order to survive in this world, one needs to embrace a positive and strong view of oneself, abilities and personality. It is important to know one’s strengths and build on them, and also to know one’s weaknesses and work on them to become a better person.
