The biggest problem
some people face in life is the problem of expertise. They aspire to become
experts at whatever they do and in the process forget that there is always a
place in life for improvement. When eventually they attain the status of
expertise, they are tempted to believe they have little or nothing to learn any
more. In making reference to the Bible, we can read from the book of
Philippians 3:12 where the Apostle Paul writes “not that I have already attained, or am I already perfected; but I press
on, that I may lay hold of that which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me”
(NKJV). This statement was made by a man who wrote two-thirds of the new
testament of the bible but he never even met Jesus personally. He had more than
20 years of experience in his work. He could be considered what in modern times
we call an expert.
There is always a need
for us to press on; a need for us to do better than we have done before. Forget
what was achieved yesterday, that’s gone now. Now, it’s time for you to look
ahead and see how you can do better. You can always do greater things. We have
to keep progressing to remain relevant. Success
is not a destination, it is a journey; a journey of progression and
consistency. The only thing constant in life is change and we must also
embrace change as human beings. Life challenges us daily and no new day will
present the same old challenge. The older you become, the bigger the challenges
life throws your way. Thus, you have to learn how to overcome these challenges
and the only way you can do that is to press forward and do better.
I have come to learn,
in my little time on earth, that one cannot rest on what was and hope to be a big part of what is or what will be. What was
is nothing compared to what will be.
The past is not to be compared with the future. Just because you are successful
and celebrated now doesn’t guarantee that it’ll remain that way. You have to
strive to build up yourself and become better. You have to forget what is
behind and press on to what is ahead of you.
If you’re doing well now, you can do better; if you’re better than you were, you can become the best. If you are the best
now, you can become excellent. If
you’re excellent now you can become a
standard and if you are a standard now, you can become the standard.
By all means, strive to become better than you were. It’s not bad to look back;
it’s only bad to stay that way. Looking back helps you to appreciate how far
you have come and evaluate steps for the future to see how far you can still go
and believe me, that’s a long way!
This is really encouraging. God bless you.
